Karen Weiner, MD, MMM, MA, CPE is a seasoned physician leader and sought-after executive advisor who has led organizational change and transformations within the healthcare industry for more than 20 years. She carries a wealth of expertise across a decade of leading sizeable, multi-specialty healthcare organizations through global pandemic pressures, and extensive organizational change initiatives, including an acquisition by a Fortune 6 company. Dr. Weiner began her career practicing primary care pediatrics with Oregon Medical Group where she moved through the ranks to become Chief Medical Officer and ultimately progressed to Chief Executive Officer in 2016. Prior to her work as a leadership advisor, she joined Optum as Chief Executive Officer at the height of the pandemic and, under her leadership, the organization thrived in the midst of global uncertainty. Guided by a passion for helping other healthcare leaders navigate pressing change and uncertainty, she founded Proprio Consulting, where she serves as a leadership advisor and organizational diagnostician for executives in today’s complex healthcare environment. Dr. Weiner brings in-the-chair experience as a physician leader, Chief Medical Officer, and CEO. Having led organizations and physician peers through significant transformation, she understands the challenges that surface when leading people through change. She knows the unique value of external perspective, support, and thought partnership and states, “No leader should have to go it alone.” The industry values Dr. Weiner’s critical work in navigating healthcare leaders through organizational and systemic change, providing strategies for burnout prevention, and fostering workforce well-being. As a respected thought leader and keynote speaker, Dr. Weiner’s work on these topics has been featured in publications, including NEJM, The Physician Leadership Journal, and AMGA’s Group Practice Journal. Throughout her career, Dr. Weiner has served on many boards including the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) and the Oregon Medical Group Board of Directors. This has provided her a unique perspective on the governance and policy side of healthcare delivery systems and contributes to her ability to positively impact organizations of all sizes. She earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California and completed her pediatric residency at OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon. She holds a master’s degree in medical management from the University of Southern California and a master’s degree in organizational psychology and change leadership from Columbia University. Additionally, she is certified in the Hogan Suite of Assessments.
