1. How is the aviation industry in Switzerland evolving?

The aviation industry in Switzerland is experiencing several key developments of which I would like to pick out three. Firstly, passenger traffic is recovering post-pandemic with Zurich, Geneva, and Basel airports seeing increased flight movements. Secondly, there is a strong push towards sustainability with efforts to reduce carbon emissions and the introduction of alternative synthetic fuels. And finally, Swiss airports and airlines are investing in advanced technologies to improve efficiency and passenger experience, including the use of biometrics for faster check-ins and enhanced security measures.

2. What role do search firms play in the aviation industry?

Search firms provide aviation organizations with access to strong networks of specialized talent, ensuring they find candidates who align with both the technical requirements and strategic goals. This makes search firms a valuable partner in maintaining a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving aviation industry.

Here is an example of a complex search that we are submitting a proposal for: The current Director of the EuroAirport Basel has announced they will leave the position after 10 years. This airport has the special feature that it is located on French territory but at the governance level, it is managed equally by French and Swiss managers. For example, if the Chairman of the Board is French then the Managing Director must be Swiss. As an executive search firm, we must consider this balance and also evaluate the two different management styles and cultures inside one company.

3. Which roles and skill sets are emerging as critical?

Apart from the classic functions such as pilots, technicians, and air traffic controllers, who continue to play a central role, new equally demanding profiles are emerging driven by technological advancements, sustainability goals, and evolving industry needs. For example, Cyber Security Specialists. As aviation systems become more interconnected, the need for cyber security professionals is increasing to protect flight systems and other critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Another example is sustainability Officers. With the aviation industry’s focus on reducing its environmental impact, Sustainability Officers are becoming increasingly important. The drive to increase innovation and implement effective strategies has never been greater. Thirdly, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operators. The use of drones in various applications from cargo delivery to surveillance is growing. Skilled UAV Operators are in demand to manage these operations safely and effectively.

4. What are some key sustainability initiatives?

Besides the already mentioned efforts to reduce carbon emissions, I would like to emphasize two more key sustainability initiatives to reduce the environmental impact and promote sustainable practices. Energy efficiency: Zurich airport for instance has implemented various energy-saving measures such as installing photovoltaic systems on aircraft docks and car parks. Another example is noise reduction. Efforts to minimize noise pollution at the three Swiss airports include optimizing flight paths and using quieter aircraft. These measures help reduce the impact of airport operations on surrounding communities.
